The new diesel engines are now available in the SEAT Ibiza, rounding out the line of turbo-charged engines on offer from the company’s bestseller. The range of diesel engines is powered by 80, 95 and 115 PS with the same block 1.6 TDI, in compliance with Euro 6 standards. Worth noting is its refined performance and optimal soundproofing features in the cabin, in addition to reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
After four generations and almost 5.5 million vehicles sold, the new SEAT Ibiza marks a turning point in the history of the model, with a discernible evolution. It boasts an exceptionally dynamic character, optimal versatility, and efficiency along with the most complete and advanced technology in regards to driving assistance, safety, comfort and connectivity, characteristic of high-end vehicles.
The model engine update arrives also in a unique moment for SEAT: In the first ten months SEAT has sold 395,100 cars which represents a 14.4% growth in comparison with the same period last year, SEAT’s best results since 2001. The rise in sales in 2017 is reflected in SEAT’s financial results. The company’s operating profit increased by 12.3% in the first nine months when compared to the same period in 2016, achieving 154 million euros. At the same time, turnover increased by 11.0% reaching 7,255 million euros between January and September 2017.
Three new 1.6 TDI diesel engines ranging from 80 to 115 PS.
New turbocharged 1.6 TDI
The Ibiza new diesel engines incorporate a series of advanced technological features that make them one of the most sophisticated and efficient engine on the market. Features like the second-generation selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, to achieve better efficiency, reducing and transforming NOx particles into elements that are harmless to the environment. For that, the Ibiza incorporates an AdBlue tank, located on the right hand rear side of the vehicle, with the fill point next to the fuel spout.
The turbocharged diesel engines have 1.598 cc capacity, 16 valves and four cylinders, and 80, 95 and 115 PS of power. The direct injection common rail fuel system with electromagnetic fuel injectors deliver a more homogeneous and efficient mixture, no matter the temperature or pressure in the chamber. The dimensions of the cylinder almost make up a 1.01 mm frame, with 79.5 mm of diameter and 80.5 mm stroke. The powerplant´s engineering calls for the perfect balance to achieve excellent fuel consumption, while having a piston stroke that is not too long, to easily increase the rotational speed and, at the same time, to increase power without the need for greater cylinder capacity.
The answer to any of the three mechanical versions of 1.6 TDI engine block, in addition to being smooth, is to still be incredibly strong from a low-end torque, to post highly significant torque numbers. Therefore, from idle up to practically the red line, the new diesel Ibiza moves with such surprising precision and strength, with hardly a noise or vibration. All of this is indicative of the quality of performance.
The first stage covers the 1.6 TDI-80 PS, delivering power between 2700 and 4800 rpm, and a maximum torque of 230 Nm, powered by speeds between 1400 and 2400 rpm. These working are tied to a 5-speed manual gearbox that goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.3 seconds. The average fuel consumption is 3.8 litres/100 km and emits 99 g/km of CO2.
The next available engine is the 1.6 TDI-95 PS, with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a DSG dual clutch automatic and seven speeds, the latter will be available at the start of 2018. In the manual shift version, the maximum power delivered is between 2750 and 4600 rpm, and maximum torque, that increases to 250 Nm, between 1500 and 2600 rpm. Likewise, it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds, its average fuel consumption 3.8 l/100 km and emits just 99 g/km of CO2.
The range-topping model is the 1.6 TDI-115 PS, tied to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Apart from the new diesel engines, the Ibiza is also available with a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and petrol engine: 1.0 litre TGI delivering 90 PS. The standard petrol engine range in the Ibiza goes from 75PS (65 PS in some countries) to 150 PS with the 1.5 Evo TSI four-cylinder engine.
Maximum efficiency, reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
The MQB A0 Platform
The new generation of the Ibiza is made in the SEAT plant in Martorell and marks a definitive step in the future of the company. On display is the latest technology from the Volkswagen Group, the modular transversal platform on the MQB A0 (Modular Querbaukasten). This platform gives the Ibiza more robustness and lightweight combination, spectacular dynamism and a notable increase in interior space. The new MQB A0 platform allows for greater manufacturing flexibility as it supports different models and enables different body types within the same segment, thereby accepting different configurations of varying distances between the wheel base within the same base platform.
A great performer
The new SEAT Ibiza truly hold the DNA of the brand, with a dynamic and fun handling, without forgetting the excellent rolling comfort and the safety. The exceptional handling is due to the new MQB A0 platform, a superior torsional rigidity, the increase in wheelbase and track width, and an advanced truly efficient running gear.
On one hand, the steering is C-EPS (Column Electric Power System), with electromechanical assistance, supports a very precise, smooth and straight drive, while grouping together all the components in the same column. In respect to the suspension system, the new SEAT Ibiza uses MacPherson at the front of the car and a semi-rigid rear axle in the back. With the FR version, the height of the body of the car is reduced by 15 mm and slight modifications are made to calibrate the suspension, with some shock absorbers at 20 % stronger, while the diameter of the front stabiliser bar was made fatter. The exact difference is 21 x 3.7 mm in the FR and 20.7 x 2.8 mm in the rest. The semi-rigid back axle is also stronger in the FR.
A great qualitative leap was also made in terms of reducing noise, vibrations and rough handling. Overall, the Ibiza offers a quality more often seen on higher-end vehicles. It’s agile in the city, handles well on winding roads and offers a comfortable ride when it comes time for a long trip.
Attractive design, a core value
The fifth generation SEAT Ibiza is flawlessly proportioned with strong character and striking dynamism at first sight; triangular LED daytime running headlights and a more sculpted engine bonnet with nerve lines that connect to the lines of the bumper, creating a sensation that’s both solid and fluid at once. Along the sides, the sharp style lines display not only power and fluidity, but also, enhance the three-dimensional shape of the bodywork with accentuated sparkles of light, that deepen the sensation of movement of the new Ibiza. The short overhangs give it a sporty yet sturdy and dynamic feel. The brake lights stand out at the rear of the vehicle. They wrap around the car and incorporate with the lateral style lines, delivering a unique design and optimal aerodynamic performance. The strong and precise lines along the doors and bumper, increase the perception of depth and create a monolithic look to the car, giving a greater sense of stability.
As for the interior, care has been well taken to align it with the exterior, delivering power and harmony with the combination of colours and materials, with greater elegance and perception of quality. In keeping with that, next year the Ibiza will come with a panel of customisable digital dials to display all the information available at the centre console. Eyes never have to leave the road nor hands the steering wheel, allowing the driver to control the multifunctional steering wheel.
The FR version includes features that show off its sporty feel, like twin exhaust pipes on the rear diffusor. For its part, the chrome trim on the Xcellence accentuates its elegance and sophistication. The new SEAT Ibiza is available in different metallic colours: Desire Red, Mystery Blue, Mystic Magenta, Pyrenees Grey, Orange Eclipse, Urban Silver, Snow White or Midnight Black, as well as soft colours: Mediterranean Blue and White. The formulation of these colours makes the sculpted exterior shapes more evident.
