Multitronic

The Multitronic is an automatic transmission that uses a continuously variable transmission ratio. Transmissions of this type are also called CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). By means of two variators, each conically shaped, the drive belt (a link chain) can glide infinitely over differing radii on the two axles of the transmission. As it does so, the electronic control continuously monitors and optimizes the transmission ratio.

This automatic feedback control of the transmission ratio enables transmission without interrupting traction. The Multitronic always uses the optimum torque and enables ideal acceleration and fuel economy at the same time.

A special feature of the Multitronic in conjunction with the Tiptronic is that permanently programmed "virtual" gears can be simulated. In the correspondingly selected mode, this mode allows the driver to shift gear via rocker switches on the steering wheel.
