Crash tests are used during new car development to optimise occupant protection.
In these, prototypes of cars further along in the production process are used to simulate different types of accidents. The aim is not only to improve occupant protection and reduce forces acting on the passengers in an accident, but also to reduce the risk of injury to other road users (pedestrians, cyclists, etc).
