The exhaust gases from diesel engines, since they work with excess air, cannot be treated by a three-way diesel catalytic converter because using a lambda control is excluded on technical grounds. Here, an oxidation catalyser is used to reduce HC and CO to CO2. On the other hand, it is not suitable for reducing nitrogen oxides.
